The right first aid
- Blot, never rub. Press clean, dry paper towel or cloth into the spot and stand on it. Repeat with fresh towel until barely any moisture transfers. Rubbing pushes the accident deeper and frays the fibre.
- Work from the outside in so you don’t spread the edge of the spot.
- Rinse lightly with a little cold water and blot again. Cold — heat sets protein stains.
- Skip the supermarket miracle sprays on anything you care about. Many contain optical brighteners or strong solvents that leave a bleached-looking patch worse than the stain.
Why pet urine is its own problem
Urine doesn’t sit on the carpet — it wicks down through the pile into the backing and underlay. Surface cleaning removes what you can see, while the source of the odour stays below, and every humid day brings it back. That’s why a spot can “come back” weeks after it looked clean: it never actually left.
When to call a professional
- The smell returns after your best surface clean — the source is in the backing.
- Repeat accidents in the same area (pets re-mark where they smell themselves).
- Old, dried stains you’ve only just discovered behind furniture.
- You’re a renter — documented professional treatment matters at vacate time.
